Thanks for having me. My name is Veronika Fjord and I`m a fashion and beauty photographer based in Helsinki, Finland. I picked up a camera for the first time when I was eight, and I got it as a birthday present. This first camera was cheap, plastic, and disposable. After this, I had a lot of different digital cameras, but in 2014 I finally bought my first DSLR camera by Canon
For a beginning, can you please give us a little intro as to what motivated you to become a photographer?
I started studying business and law but suddenly I changed my focus to photography and further to cinematography. I never really planned it out, it just turned out that way.
Veronika, how would you describe your photography style?
I would describe my photography style as so-called “between” or “everything” because my fashion photos have their commercial glimpse and beauty, yet still contain the pictorial and artistic count. I somehow mixed up using elements from both sides. The common theme is always me and how I see the world.
Where do you draw inspiration from?
I look at lots of other photographers' works, additionally, nature, movies, books, magazines, set design at events and parties, and travel! I think it’s important to try and get away from social media when you are looking for inspiration, otherwise, the algorithm just starts to dictate all your ideas.
Before you start a shoot, how will you prepare yourself?
First of all by thinking of the worst scenario and making sure that I have several backup plans. Shoots hardly ever go according to the plan, so I’m always making sure I have backup options. Second, If I’m shooting in the studio I start by setting up my lighting equipment and taking some tester shots. I also make sure that all of my equipment is ready, my team has all the required details. I make sure everything is prepared so that the shoot goes smoothly.
What is typically in your camera bag and what is your favorite photography accessory, other than your camera?
It’s two actually -Lens Pen & UV Filters. These two have always been there in my kit to keep my lenses clean & protective.
Is there such a thing as photogenic people or just really good portrait photographers?
I think there’s both, but there is such a thing as photogenic people, either by the way they appear or by their expression.
I photograph a lot of celebrities and you would think they are photogenic, but they can also make it very difficult and challenging if they don’t want to give very much. Those who may not look so interesting but have a lot of personalities are playful and want to try various ideas, they benefit from much better results.
Best shooting experience you’ve ever had?
None is the best, life is a learning journey and every day is a new day. I look forward to tomorrow.
What are common mistakes beginners make when taking photos?
I don’t see mistakes in photography because each person has their unique reason for taking that photo. Like, is there such a thing as a bad photo? I don’t think so. there are technical errors from a professional side. You may be like ‘Hmm, this is how you can do that better. But I wouldn’t necessarily say it’s a mistake.
Words of wisdom you would like to share?
Becoming a photographer is not new to hear or aspire, but it’s not only about having the best of the class high-end camera with you and doing the shoots. Being a photographer not at all as easy and celebrated as it looks from the outside.
Find your group, your squad, your photo-buddies. Honestly, take every opportunity which would help you to enhance your craft.
To find your niche. Your photos speak for your personality, and your niche is your area of interest/specialization.
Never stop practicing and investing in your craft. Keep looking every single day from wherever you can gain new knowledge or a new perspective.
Know yourself and your equipment. There’s a connection you’ll develop with time, and once you both are in sync, then it would bring in that confidence, which all you need to shine through.
Can you tell us how people can find out more about your work?
You can see my work at Behance, 500pix and you can follow me on Instagram @veronikafjord
