Nicole: Photography is my freedom to create and express myself

Photographer: Nicole @nicoledenisephotography
Model: Jaymee Kobryn @jxymee
Makeup Artist: Brittani Hodges @hodgesxbrittani

To begin, can you please give us a little intro as to what motivated you to become a photographer?

When my son was born, he was just so beautiful. I remember laying in the bed with him when he was born, and just being inspired by him. I pulled out my T-mobile Razor phone, and began to take photos of him. I haven’t put the camera down since.

What are the most important lessons you have learned about fashion photography so far?

Don’t follow what everyone else does. Shoot what you like, even if the photo theme isn’t popular. Put your creativity on it. Be true to who you are as an artist. Never be afraid to try something new.

What would you say is your style of photography?

I enjoy beauty, art, and fashion photography. I think I have a up close and personal approach. I love to catch emotions. I also love black and white.

How long does it take to create one of these wonderful works?

I usually study the model, and research ideas. To complete my process usually 1-2 weeks for photos to be ready.

How do you manage to make your models feel comfortable in front of the camera?

I try to make them laugh. I give them their space. I always ask permission before touching or adjusting anything on a model. Speak to them with respect.

From your point of view, what are the most difficult aspects of professional fashion photography?

I would say the nervousness of is it good enough. Being creative, and coming up with new and innovative shoot ideas. Also making things work with a budget can also be difficult.

Are there any other photographers you look-up to? Who?

OMG yes, my favorite is America’s Top Model Nigel Barker. I love his style, and the way he sees things through his lens. Recently I was so blessed to have him critique my work. It was one of the best days of my photo career. He gave me feedback that I will house in my heart forever.

In addition to being sharp and well lit, your photos are beautifully edited. What is your retouching/production philosophy?

I would say less is more. Sometimes you have to stop yourself from overdoing it.

If you couldn't be a photographer, what would be your other career choice?

I can’t think of anything else I would want to be. Photography is my freedom to create and express myself. I’m so thankful to God for this gift.

What projects are you working on next, and what are your goals for the future?

I would love to do more art photography. I really love black and white. So possibly doing a series with just black and white. My goal for the future is to learn more about fashion photography. I would love one day to attend NYFW. My ultimate goal is to travel the world and have wine and cheese and have photo shoots with celebrities.
